Passions In Bloom

My journey to finding inspiration and happiness

word of the day

Word of the Day—August 25, 2016

adulatory (adj): excessively praising or admiring

The professor’s comments were full of adulatory remarks and really weren’t helpful at all.

Word of the Day–October 26, 2015

Execrate (verb): feel or express great loathing for

The professors who don’t curve tests are often unfairly execrated–it’s our job to get help when we need it, not their job to dish out undeserved points.

Word of the Day–October 23, 2015

Squall (noun): a sudden, violent gust of wind or a localized storm

Now that I live in North Carolina, I get the chance to venture onto a boat and ride through the blustery squalls blowing in from the ocean.

P.S. I have actually been on a boat in the ocean! We didn’t go very far since it was for a class, but the sea was choppy and the waves were rough and I got a little bit seasick 😦

Word of the Day– August 9, 2015

Happy Sunday! Here’s a great word for you:

Dearth (noun): a scarcity or lack of something

There is a puzzling dearth of job opportunities coming my way; it’d be appreciated if one were to pop up 🙂

P.S. I don’t know how to say it, but it sure looks like a neat word!

Word of the Day–August 6, 2015

I have so many new words that I can’t help posting!

Verisimilitude (noun): the appearance of being true or real

To be a verisimilar person, you must be honest to yourself and follow what you think is right.

(No, computer, I spelled it right! Stop telling me my big-girl words are spelled wrong!)

Word of the Day–August 5, 2015

I found so many lovely words while reading The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King, and it was hard to pick just one for today! But here it is:

Sough (verb): (of the wind) to make a moaning, whistling, or rushing sound

The soft soughing in the air swished mysteriously from the squalls over the sea.

It’s almost like sigh, but not quite 🙂

Word of the Day–July 27, 2015

Today’s smart-girl word is:

Evince (verb): to reveal the presence of a feeling

Using an impressive vocabulary may evince someone’s admiration for your intelligence 🙂

Happy learning!

Word of the Day–July 25, 2015

I love words! Here’s a great word to know:

Obdurate (adjective): Stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion.

When I know I am right, I will practice obduracy and stand up for myself.

Happy learning 🙂

“The love of learning, the sequestered nooks, and all the sweet serenity of books.” ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Word of the Day–July 23, 2015

I love learning new words and expanding my vocabulary. It makes me a better reader, writer, and educated member of society. As I read, I collect words I don’t know, look them up, and record them in a personal dictionary. Here’s today’s word of the day!

Sunder (verb): split apart

I love this word because there’s so many different ways to say “divide”, and now I have another way!

What are your favorite words? Happy learning 🙂

“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” ~Albert Einstein
